The Idea Behind the HUHA Legacy Collection

In October, I found myself reflecting on ways to expand my photography business during a challenging period. Inspired by the fine art animal portraits of renowned photographers like Randal Ford, I decided to combine my love for photography with a meaningful cause. This is how the HUHA Legacy Collection was born—a project dedicated to capturing the unique personalities of rescue animals while raising funds to support HUHA, New Zealand’s cherished animal rescue organisation.

The Spark of an Idea

The concept for the HUHA Legacy Collection came to me during a photo shoot with dogs. I imagined these animals as the centrepieces of timeless, fine art prints. A conversation with a friend steered me towards HUHA, an organisation deeply committed to rescuing and rehoming animals across New Zealand. With this idea in mind, I reached out to HUHA’s Marketing and Sustainability Manager, Bron. Our initial conversation, held over a video call, was the beginning of something special.

Partnering with HUHA

HUHA (Helping You Help Animals) has been a beacon of hope for animals since its founding in 2001. Operating as a no-kill shelter, their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals while advocating for their welfare. They care for a wide variety of animals, from dogs and cats to horses and wildlife. It was the perfect partnership for this project. After sharing the idea with HUHA’s CEO, Carolyn, the project gained momentum. Their enthusiasm cemented my commitment to bringing this vision to life.

Behind the Scenes of the Project

The first steps involved defining the collaboration. I proposed covering all costs—equipment, prints, and time—while HUHA would provide access to their animals and support during photoshoots. This arrangement ensured that 100% of the profits from the prints would go directly to HUHA’s life-saving work. The journey began with two photoshoots in November—one at HUHA’s Haywood sanctuary, where I photographed a variety of animals, and another at the Otaki Dog Shelter, focusing on rescue dogs.

Why It Matters

The HUHA Legacy Collection is more than a photography project; it’s a testament to the power of art to drive change. Every print sold contributes directly to HUHA’s mission, providing resources to rescue, rehabilitate, and care for animals in need. This collaboration highlights the intersection of creativity and compassion—art with heart.

What’s Next?

This project is just the beginning. Over the next year, I’ll continue photographing HUHA’s animals, creating a growing collection of fine art prints. Each image will be accompanied by the story of the animal it portrays, offering buyers a deeper connection to their chosen piece.

How You Can Help

Support the HUHA Legacy Collection by purchasing prints or sharing this project with others. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of countless animals.
